Is it the right time to look for a new role?

Is it the right time to look for a new role?

All of us have different answers for the above question. Some of them might term it to be an unrelevant topic to discuss. However, this topic crossed my mind when one of my friends had trouble working with his manager. He has invested 5 years with the same organization and has grown in ranks with the same company over the years. He had a strong trigger to look for a change because his manager is not appreciative of his work and they are having troubled times with each other for the past one year and the general manager has not done anything to solve this issue.

One more professional in my network is going through troubled times at work due to business reasons , his work has been put to test and he has been asked to hire for only 4 positions which were not fulfilled for the past 6 months due to unrealistic expectations and a Google like interview process by the client. It was really unfortunate that management did not want to address business problems and wants to run away blaming the same squarely on the recruiters. Even the biggest companies fall like trees during turbulent business situations. Leaders are those who overcome these situations to ensure their teams don't get affected. A good leader takes responsibility for his or her acts and moves ahead with the next steps. Even Steve Jobs failed in one of his ventures , was out of his jobband started apple later. It is difficult to say if we can preplan our career transition when multiple things might affect our career at some point of time.
The problems for looking out could be many like ;
A. Change in management and new management style is not people centric.
B. Unrealistic expectations at work.
C. Relocation to a new home far from the office location.

There are probable 100 more reasons. There are no straight forward answers to answer these questions.

The following questions might help you answer your trigger or need for change fairly.

1. Have I grown with the organisation by rank and salary all these years.
2. Do I see further growth in the organization?
3. Is the environment conducive for growth in the years to come?
4. Are you comfortable working with your manager and would her inability to execute her work has affect on your growth?
5. What is your fair assessment of your role in the current organisation and is there still scope for learning?
6. Does the management appreciate both your loyalty and work?
7. Is the work challenging that you want to continue working for the next 6 months to 1.6 yrs?

You are the best judge to figure out the need for a change in job / career. Your manager and the respective business unit head is also equally responsible for the same.

Here are a few suggestions which might help in an easy transition during crisis situations.

1. Have an alternate source of income which does not affect your standing if you have to let go your job due to external factors.
2. When you see troubled times in your current job, float your resume to ensure that you meet other employers and figure out the right offers for you and pick the best for you.
3. Have a back plan A B C D and may be E too. You never know what clicks and what fails and what will take you where.
4. Always help people to succeed irrespective of what level of work. Build your network and help people to grow so that you naturally grow with them. Use the power of networking to come across suitable opportunities.

I assume that you would have already exhausted all the options within your company before you could think --> Is it the right time to look for a new role?
