It is natural to have dot balls in cricket and it is part of the game. The same dot applies in the recruitment industry with a slightly different context altogether. As recruiters we all chase targets which are set as per the deadlines given by business. The most important thing to be taken care off as a recruiter is to take a back seat and find out if we have taken enough care about ensuring that the candidate is going to stay connected with us during the entire interview process. It will be sheer waste of energy and time if the same is not done judiciously. Here are a few tips which has helped me to engage with the candidates well during the entire recruitment process.
1.Start your conversation / pitch so that you can grab the attention of your candidates. Research says we only have 30-45 seconds to grab someones attention and impress them and thus the candidate has already made a decision whether to listen to us or not. The same applies in an interview process as well, The interviewer has already made up his mind based on how well we tried to engage the interviewer during the process. Hence, creating "Likeability" is an important part of the entire process. As one of the famous Sales Gurus rightly said ; "if we like you , we will buy from you".
2. Hiring the best candidate requires certain essentials to be followed, which includes knowing about the key salient features about your product or service as much about your organisation. Putting it across to the candidate in the right format or manner to gain his / her continued interest in the conversation and the commitment to pursue the career opportunity.
3.Recruitment professionals are generally trained to engage with candidates looking for jobs very professionally during the initial phases of their career and the same may not work while you grow up the ladder. If only being professional was about serious discussion with your candidates, then we would not have heard the tagline from Coffee day , "A lot can happen over a coffee".
Candidates may not want to connect with recruiters who do not have originality of thought and with some one who cannot bring something new to the table. Hence, ensure you are updated with industry trends and jargon's. Nevertheless to say "When you are in Rome speak Roman".
4. Become a partner of the candidate in helping him or her take the right decision for their career, Especially, when you too have extended an offer to the candidate. Help him or her to take the decision, take that extra effort to help him/ her join your company. ( not by force, push, etc) but through sheer power of information, facts , figures and value adds if any.
5. Humor is the most powerful tool to deescalate any situation , it could be with your boss, skip level , clients or candidates. Use the power of humor to help people around you and yourself. In my case , I use it while negotiating salaries with the candidates and that works well for me.
6.Be friendly with your candidates as that`s what differentiates you from thousands of recruiters in the industry. Friendliness is not the mark of being not assertive. It just means that you are much more approachable or have more listening skills than other recruiters around you.
There are many more tips that you could follow to keep the candidates engaged and ensure that no one allows your interview slots or offers become dots.
